Why purchase native plants for your yard?
In case you aren’t already a native plant enthusiast like myself, these are some of the reasons why “going native” in your landscape is worth it.
Texas native plants are:
- Hardy and tough -our Texas native plants have been growing in nature for thousands and thousands of years and are well-adapted to our Texas climate.
- Drought tolerant – native plants tend to require less water and many can survive on rainfall alone once established.
- Support your local ecosystem – our native plants serve as important host plants for butterflies, moths, and other insects. They also make provide habitat and food sources for wildlife.
- Provide a sense of place – Some of the most beautiful Texas landscapes I’ve seen are created with our native plants. If you want a yard that looks like Texas, skip the turf grass and evergreen shrubs and grow Texas native plants instead!

1) The Nectar Bar
The Nectar Bar was the first all Texas native plant nursery to open in San Antonio. Owner Drake White is a local butterfly expert, and she taught me a lot about butterfly gardening when I was first getting started. Head to Nectar Bar for native milkweed and unique species you can’t find elsewhere. Drake posts her inventory on Instagram each week.
The Nectar Bar accepts rewards from the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) WaterSaver Rewards program. If you are a San Antonio resident, this program is a no-brainer for free plant money!
2) Pollinatives
Pollinatives is my go-to nursery here in San Antonio and another great addition to San Antonio’s nursery scene in the past couple years. Located in Converse, owners Donald and Melanie Gerber have created a lovely nursery with helpful signage and large variety of Texas native plants – from 4 inch pots to large trees. Pollinatives also accepts our local SAWS Water Saver Rewards coupons.
Be sure to follow Pollinatives on Instagram for regular videos featuring their inventory.
